As we headed down the runway just before liftoff at Schiphol Airport, I snapped a photo of this windsock as I mused about its continued use in our high-tech world.
It seemed so unusual and basic, like using a typewriter instead of a computer — and somehow, it felt good. Don’t you miss the days we used to call each other instead of texting? Or the days when three people would look into each other’s eyes as they spoke instead of staring at their screens as if they were alone at the dinner table?
As basic as a windsock may appear; all airports are required to have something like a windsock by law, and their efficient simplicity have stood the test of time.
When I chose to learn a little more, I noted that one pilot stated that in addition to the digitized systems available, he ALWAYS takes a last look at the windsock. Another pilot stated that the windsock gives you instant results rather than automated messages that are updated every few minutes.
What’s your windsock?
Trust the guidance you can see and feel. Trust your windsock. Trust your gut. Often, it will give you an on-the-ground and visceral understanding of what is and what is to be done. Use the advantages of a good balance of the old-fashioned way of navigating your choices and decisions in addition to the increasingly available high-tech automated systems.
But remember your windsock!
