The Report Cards

Are you still holding on to what someone else said about you 50, 20, 10 years ago maybe yesterday?  I know I struggle, more than I really care to admit, and find it quite an intentional task to let go of the not so empowering and unsupportive words I have experienced from others.

For better or for worse, words and ideas are like glue and can stay and stick for a very long time.

Children are particularly influenced by the repetitive messages of parents and teachers. The results can be devastating or they can help build and mold a masterpiece.

Partners and friends have similar impact.  “Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you to can become great.” ~ Mark Twain.

As a child growing up in Uganda my teachers’ written report cards felt prophetic, like the voice of God telling my parents what would unfold in my future, determining whether I was punished or rewarded. “Facility with numbers is lacking”, “Her imaginative work is particularly good” or regarding P.E. &
Games “Works well, but has little natural ability”.

Think back on all your report cards, academic or otherwise – how have they influenced who you are today? What are the people around you saying to you?

Most importantly, how are you ‘grading’ yourself?

You decide,
