Searching For Truth

I paraphrased an old legend, which goes something like this:

A deity wanted to encourage us to diligently search for the truth, and he pondered where to hide it. He thought about mountains, but decided no, they would easily climb to the highest peaks searching for truth. He then thought of the deepest oceans. But then he knew their adventurous spirits would make them dive to whatever depths necessary.

After a few more ideas, he came up with the very best answer. He decided he’d hide the truth within each human being.

Most of us want to find and know the truth. And, more often than not, we look outside ourselves to people who we believe are more knowledgeable, more experienced, more trustworthy, or more holy. And sure, there are many times when we do seek knowledge and knowing from those we consider to be wise.

But … we’re talking about a different kind of truth here. Think about pondering over who you are, what’s most important to you, what you believe … and you’ll be closer to the kind of truth I’m referencing.

If it sounds elusive, perhaps that’s because it can be. It’s up to us to harness a diligent effort, ask the right questions, and make the choices to reach for what we truly desire.

To the deity’s point, it’s easier for us to reach for the stars than it is for us to go within, deep within to sit and … listen to the truth that was inside us all along.

To answer questions like what do I truly want; what do I really believe; or what should I do? become stressful not because we cannot answer them; but because they require a deeper inquiry than we are often prepared to face.

The photo above was taken five years ago during our 13-day, coast-to-coast walk across England. The three of us were thrilled by the adventure of it all, and by our altruistic goals too. However, we each silently held individual expectations and desires as well. Perhaps we were calling upon something that was deep within us …

Search for truth,
