Riding with the Tide

The East African coast of Zanzibar is graced by a warm and inviting Indian Ocean. I remember an unexpected surprise at one of our Love Is A Mountain Safari Retreats: The resort was beautifully situated above sea level …but, during high tides, we had to go down the steps as seen in the photo above and straight into the ocean. No hesitant, tip toeing in to test the waters. However, during low tides, those same steps led to brilliant white, crystalline sand and the gentle ocean waves just beyond it.

These are high tide times. We can’t depend on the natural flow and rhythms that we had grown so accustomed to. We are being called to step right into what’s before us. No beach front that allows us to observe the waters from afar.

How to thrive without the customary ebb and flow is a question we are striving to address individually and organizationally. How do we prepare ourselves and our teams for the new waves of uncertainty and changed ways of living and doing business? How do we keep each other focused despite the ongoing barrage of an indeterminate number of changes that erase the shoreline and relentlessly sends more waves?

The consequences and impact of the tides, whether high or low, is one of perspective. Tides pose challenges and also offer creativity and solutions in spite of those challenges.

If we want to encourage cohesiveness within ourselves and our organizations, we need a collective acknowledgement of what it takes to move forward. It helps us all as we deepen our understanding of the choices we are making in our homes and places of work.

Keep everything you have ever learned about yourself, and human behavior, within reach …

Step into the water …
