Several years ago, I visited the unique and historical island of Lamu, off the coast of Kenya. Lamu has paths and alleyways, but no roads. People get around by foot, and by boat. And, donkeys are used to transport goods.
Navigating by road, is an intricate system in the far majority of the world. We use maps, a compass and of course our trusted GPS telling us which way to turn from where we are to where we want to be. Whether we are in a plane, car or a boat, we expect today’s technology to help us reach our destination.
Wouldn’t it be great if we had similar navigation systems for life?
Some will argue that we can’t be sure how our lives will unfold anyway. On the other hand, Abraham Lincoln said: “The best way to predict your future is to create it.”
What do you believe?
For our personal lives, I lean toward creating roadmaps, setting intentions, and then taking action steps toward a designated destination. Sure, we may drift off track and lose our way or even have to make a major course correction. And that’s okay.
Life in Lamu is much simpler than what most of us experience. But as we move full speed ahead into 2020 and our next decade; we want to know where we’re going and how we’re planning to get there.
