Accident! What a name – no offense to the people who live there. It’s just … well … unusual.
In a nutshell, the town is in Western Maryland and there were 600 acres of land that were being surveyed for payment of a debt from King George II of England. There was an error and the town was established in 1916 as Accident because of the mistake.
I don’t have much to say about the town itself – we head in and out of it on the way to Deep Creek Lake, MD – it’s small, quaint, and only takes a minute or so to go through. However, the name always triggers metaphorical questions in my head.
I wonder how it feels to have the word ‘accident’ hanging over your head all your life. Many of us carry stories of mishaps in years gone by – we recant them over and over again and they get buried deep inside our psyche.
What’s in a name or a story? Everything. There is an energy that is attached to the thought patterns we hold onto and they rise up as excuses for the way things are or as a reason why certain things did not happen as we had hoped for or expected.
If you have any ‘Accidents’ in your life, keep driving through, don’t stop and no sightseeing – it’s enough!
Stay safe,
