Without hesitation, the captain of our boat steered toward four men who needed help. Even from a distance, I could see that one of them was dumping bucket loads of water from their small fishing vessel back into the sea. There was no danger; however, they weren’t going to get anywhere fast without some form of intervention.
Our captain quickly explained that it was his duty to help them. He shared that help on the road was much more likely than help out at sea. We understood.
The rescue line was thrown out, tied up and we towed them back to their small fishing village.
The job was done … there were enthusiastic waves of gratitude… and, a Creole shout out as we set back out toward our destination.
What did it take? Awareness, a willingness, the ability to make a difference … and, a wee bit of our time.
Such simple ingredients.
And yet, too many of us would rather be a passerby – perhaps with a brief moment of empathy as we rush toward wherever we are headed. Pause for a minute and think of a situation or two in the past where a few minutes of your time could have steered someone toward her next important move.
